Discovery Green is possibly the best spot in Houston. There’s just so much to do there! And in addition, every winter, part of the space turns into an ice skating rink. Yes, you read that correctly. From November 16 until January 27, there will be an outdoor ice skating rink in the heart of Houston. Discovery Green in Houston is only 15 minutes from Monarch Medical Center, so make sure you make plans to check ice skating off your winter bucket list.
When to Go
Weekends are the busiest times to go so it would be worthwhile to go Monday through Thursday from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm. On Fridays, they stay open an extra hour. On weekends and school holidays, the rink opens at 11:00 am and closing times vary. There are private events on December 16 and January 13 and 20. However, the rink is open to the public the rest of the season!
Every Wednesday night from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm is Date Night, so grab someone you love and head to the rink. Hold hands and glide around the ice under the twinkling stars. On select dates, there will be live music and the snack shop will always keep you warm with hot chocolate.
Most Mondays are Cheap Skate Nights and admission is buy one get one free. Check the website for dates that are exempt before you go.
Although you don’t have to bring your own skates, you do need to wear socks. Just in case you wore flip-flops or high heels, make sure you bring long socks.
It’s also a really good idea to purchase your ticket online. But if that’s not possible, you can buy one at the rink. There are no set session times, but your ticket will be valid for 90 minutes from when you enter.
You’ll probably work up an appetite, so if you’re in the area between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm, walk a few blocks to try Brooklyn Meatball Co. It was featured on “America’s Next Big Restaurant” featuring Bobby Flay. Get two homemade meatballs with basil ricotta and fresh bread for only five bucks.
