Explore History at Sam Houston Park

The 20-acre Sam Houston Park is considered one of Houston’s greatest assets. Built in 1899, Sam Houston Park boasts numerous historical sites, all located not far from Monarch Medical Center. Here, guests can explore buildings that have been meticulously renovated and that reflect the community’s heritage. Docent-led tours are also offered through The Heritage Society At Sam Houston Park. Highlights of the tour include:

Old Place

Once situated on the banks of Clear Creek, Old Place moved to its permanent location at Sam Houston Park in the early 1970s. Highlighting the architecture of buildings from the Texas frontier, this log cabin exemplifies the one-room homes built during that time.

Here, guests can get a sense of how settlers lived in the 1820s and beyond. If you’re game, join the special monthly tours to see live demonstrations of domestic life from bygone days.

San Felipe Cottage

San Felipe Cottage exemplifies a typical 19th-century home belonging to European immigrants. Cottages like it have been around since 1868. Though they mainly housed immigrant families from Germany, many also housed newly settled families from England, Ireland, and Switzerland. Walk through San Felipe Cottage, and you’ll see classic furniture made in Texas at the end of the 19th century.

Kellum-Noble House

One of the city’s most revered structures, Kellum-Noble House is the oldest building in Houston still standing today. With an original foundation and brick walls, the mansion exemplifies the architectural and cultural legacy of the city. Two families lent their names to this historic mansion in 1847. For a time, the home served as a schoolhouse as well as the grounds of the first zoo in Houston.

All in all, Sam Houston Park offers plenty of value for history buffs and all visitors. If you’d like to live in a location that affords you access to this amazing park, consider making your home in Houston.
